During this 8 week fashion design course, students invent a capsule collection of five outfits. Students will learn how to:

  • apply the elements and principles of design to their work
  • research and design for a specific target market
  • visualize ideas through boards, sketching and draping
  • analyze the construction of garments
  • pattern draft through dart manipulation exercises
  • understand fabrics, notions and trims
  • make spec sheets for production (buyers and sewers)
  • make line ready to present to a buyer.

Five projects will be worked on throughout the course, which students will present to their peers on the last day. Presentation format and style is determined by each student. These projects include:

  • a target market profile
  • a mood board
  • a storyboard
  • a line sheet
  • a spec sheet.

The instructors will work with each student based on personal skill level and preferred pace.

Studio time is available to students during their 8 week session. Up to 3 hours per week (at no additional charge).

Instructors: Taran Cheema, Ou Ma and Patty Nayel  

Taranjit (Taran) Cheema is a Canadian-born designer who has a strong eye for colours and graphics. She explores mix media and always strives to create unique and inspirational pieces.

Taran Cheema graduated from Parsons The New School for Design, in New York City, with a Bachelor in Fine Arts. In May 2013, she exhibited her thesis collection at the prestigious Parsons 560 Exhibition and the Parsons Benefit Gala. Within her fashion program graduating class, she received she was among a few students who received a high score on her thesis collection.

 

Ou Ma graduated from Fashion Institute of Technology in New York with a specialization in knitwear. Right upon graduation, she showcased her capsule collection ‘Untouchable’ at New York Fashion Week, as one of the finalists for the ‘Supima Design Competition’. Her collection was published in major fashion media such as WWD, Vogue Italia, and New York Magazine etc. It was also being showcased in ‘Fashion Portfolio’ by Anna Kiper and at ENK Intermezzo Tradeshow.

She had been working at Ralph Lauren Women’s Collection and Calvin Klein Made-to- Measure Atelier,designing for series of runway fashion shows and dressing celebrities like Anne Hathaway, Christy Turlington, and Kate Winslet etc. She founded her own custom design company ‘o m design studio’ since 2014 in New York and now just opened its second location at Gastown, Vancouver

Patty Nayel is a Canadian born fashion designer who is based out of North Vancouver, British Columbia. After graduating from Kwantlen Polytechnic University in 2009 with a degree in Fashion Design, Patty started her career as a technical designer in the lingerie industry. While working there, she started her eco Bridal brand, Pure Magnolia, as a side project and launched the brand as a full collection in 2010. Patty feels quite strongly about nurturing other designers and has worked hard to promote eco-friendly vendors and photographers that she feels are doing good things for the planet.
